Rev. Caroline Steinemann Unzaga, Interim Pastor

CarolineUnzagaRev. Caroline Steinemann Unzaga was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and is a cradle Presbyterian. Caroline attended college at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. As graduation approached, she felt God’s calling to serve in the mission field through the PC(USA) in Argentina, where she volunteered as a Chaplain Assistant and taught English. After three years in Latin America, Caroline returned to the United States and began a new season as a seminarian at Princeton Theological Seminary. During that time, she was a student minister at Brick Presbyterian Church in Manhattan and Frontera de Cristo on the U.S./Mexican border. She found herself invigorated by ministry in these different settings, especially when visiting and supporting those in crisis and transition.

Following graduation, Caroline engaged in the ministries of faith formation and pastoral care. Just out of seminary, she worked as the Director of Children’s and Youth Ministries at Fanwood Presbyterian Church. From this role, she transitioned to serving as a hospital Chaplain at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital, as well as serving as a Chaplain Educator at Overlook Medical Center. She also remained connected to the church while she served as a Chaplain, serving in the role of stated supply pastor in various churches that were in transition in northern New Jersey. Most recently, Caroline served the First Presbyterian Church of Cranford, New Jersey as Associate Pastor, where she focused on Congregational Care and overseeing the educational ministries of the church.

Caroline values participation in the larger church. As such, she has served in various leadership roles, such as the co-chair of the Committee for Preparation of Ministry in Palisades Presbytery and, most currently, as a member of the Vision Team of the Presbytery of Elizabeth. She also looks forward to being part of a delegation of the Northeast Synod that will travel to Cuba this month.

Caroline is married to a Lutheran pastor, Jay, and together they are parents to Isabel and Sebastian. In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing tennis, cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family.
